Lou Reed - Live at the Royal Albert Hall

Unlike last year when Lou took a good unsure five minutes finding his feet, this time round he was up and at' em. Performing 'Berlin' his lost but classic album at the Royal Albert Hall on July 1st.
I can't help but compare tonight with last years performance on far more familiar ground, the Hammersmith Apollo and admit i actually prefer the Hammersmith gig; it was rougher round the edges and had more intensity. I think the RAH atmosphere may have a had a mellowing affect on the old guy, the RAH acoustics made their invisible presence felt by absorbing and softening all the punches in Lou's Sound.

This doesn't dim the fact that it was a great night of music and played by the best musicians in their field, Steve
Hunter on lead guitar was at his intense best, you could feel him fight the RAH's mellowing effect with burst after burst of guitar blast, I'd say it was a 50/50 outcome at evenings end.
But he was just one component of a great band, Lou's ever present bass player Fernando Saunders and on upright bass Rob Wasserman and drummer 'Thunder' Smith ... all made the night their own, along side that on rhythm was Mike Rathke, he alone seemed to have no impact upon the sound at all, one wondered why he was even there he was so low in the mix.
